It's a pretty interesting opportunity. I wonder if they will reach to companies and tell them how many things they could fix and how many are critical, before selling them the solution.

If they won't, some consultant with a subscription eventually will.

Yeah, I'm sure you use multiple different debit cards and credit cards and bank accounts and various identities to make sure nothing's correlated either, right?

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. Back in 2010 I gave a TEDx talk about how the internet can be an extension of your mind.

Nowadays I feel like it is contributing noise. The internet has become X, Reddit, AI, doomscrolling and group messaging.

Very little room for positive messaging. I don’t mean to harp about the theft of attention: the message itself is just not even contributing anything.

Out of interest what is the path to talking at a TEDx?

since they are privately organized, you need to know the organizers or somebody who knows them. Be expert in the topic in question.

On reddit i have seen multiple threads that are positive through and through with topics like, "What are you up to today?", "I just finished school and starting to work", "I am lonely and feel dreadful". I read the comments and was met with level-headed and honest comments/interactions.

As in reality it's important to have walled gardens where people can utter opinions and voice their distress or just say that they are happy. Without getting lynched. These global silos of social media is nothing but deserts where the only way of getting through the noice with any means neccessary.

I have noticed that the same amount of people down voted as up voted the comment. I wonder how they reasoned.

Love it. Did you see the old effort to store the page in the url? https://github.com/jstrieb/urlpages

That’s awesome. I took this a bit further a few years ago making a url only notepad quine that as you add data to it, creates itself. that can be saved as a bookmarklet. Have to watch the gif to understand

https://github.com/con-dog/serverless-architecture

I saw one before that was doing this and saved the whole thing as a base64 stream. So the url would dynamically update and have all its data. Pretty cool. I suppose the main obstacle is now where do I load the site from, and how much can be stored in itself or an image :)

That’s a pretty clever idea to treat it as a stream, why didn’t I think of that…

Lmk if you end up pushing this further!

Honest question: is there a reason for the naming conventions for these models? Anything that makes it better than giving them names with model numbers, like “Claude 3” or such?

Yes.

Each of the nouns is a “size class” in literature. From small lines poem (haiku, sonnet) to larger story (fable) to very large story (opus) to culture-defining foundational (myth).

It’s a fun way to say how many parameters are in the model without revealing a number like 405B or 17B which isn’t really comparable vs other models.

Interesting. Thanks for enlightening.

My non-poetic brain thinks we should call then Mini, nothing, Pro, Max, and then version numbers. Exactly like Apple. It'd be so much easier to parse. Maybe the AI companies like having the affectionate names haha

I personally hate the Mini, Nothing, Pro and Max nomenclature. I find it very tacky and the confusing having to remember a "base model" exists without any descriptor.

Apple does make it worse though, they have products like the iPhone Pro Max, which combines two!

Very interesting idea. Is this an experiment or something you’re looking to grow as a business? I’m curious about how this thing will evolve.

I would totally use a version of this for Swift programming

Thanks. I put 3 years of my life to build it, founded a nonprofit, so it is more than an experiment. In regards of business, it stays nonprofit, no investors, no exit. We will provide free messages and we will continue running our gpu servers in the long run. Our goal is to make wisdom and philosophy accessible. What will change in the next 6 to 12 months is that the complete content will transition to CC-BY 4.0. The plan is also that the development is community driven, user who engage earn voting power to vote for the next features.

I gotta say every aspect of this headline reads like bullshit. Unfortunately

Quanta usually has fairly good articles, but the headlines are often very bad.

Not just the headline. Is it possible to take any scientist talking about something they term as magic seriously?

Would you prefer "non-Cliffordness"?

Does using words that are more of a mouthful make scientist more credible?

Absolutely. "non-Cliffordness" by consturction already implies "Cliffordness", which by construction implies "Clifford" and then connects other related things. Magic doesn't do that exactly, but instead slips unnecessary connections. Clifford as a name relates to a matematician who was probably dead by the time anyway. It is considerably more neutral as a name and "free" of unrelated context. I am not knowledgeable about it, but I also wouldn't be suprised if Clifford works are also related to mathematical facilities in quantum theories where the name is invoked.

When trying to understand the reality and then convey that understanding, "mouthfulness" seems like not a concern at all.

> Is it possible to take any scientist talking about something they term as magic seriously?

Obviously. Because the fact that they use this word for something modernly scientific means that its meaning is as far from the commonfolk meaning of the word as possible. Magic doesn't mean anything sensible yet. So it's basically free real estate for something physical, especially something very foundational.

Poor woman. Somehow despite growing through hardships, it’s the loss of her husband that broke her.

May she be at peace now, and her work cherished.

From the article: “ Calling Razor 1911 simply an “Amiga demoscene group” is a bit like calling a pirate ship “a wooden transport solution.” Technically true, but you are missing the interesting part. Razor was part demo group, part cracking crew, part underground distribution machine, and part myth factory.”

"the group returned to the spotlight" kinda makes it seem as if they've ever been inactive?

I mean there were some demos at compos for sure but I’d say that’s very much an insider crowd

A lot of people commenting seem unaware it’s an actual Sega Genesis game. It will get a cart release. The modern platform support is via emulators.

It’s extremely well crafted. I’d argue it has the level of polish you’d expect from a very well made modern release. That is not the case with a lot of Genesis era shmups.

Yeah, with some effort it's possible (or at least it was) to extract the ROM from the Steam release and play it on the real hardware. They went to a fair bit of trouble to prevent that though. ROM isn't even stored in the clear in-memory while it's running. I guess they wanted to make sure they didn't cannibalize the cartridge release

Neat, love seeing people make games for older platforms but presumably with modern tools to get more out of it. More as in better performance or more as in higher productivity leading to higher quality art and / or more content.
