Did you need to know I was lurking this thread before I replied to your comment? He just wants spectator mode, I don't see the problem with that request. The avatar transparency idea or something similar could work.

Big difference. Text is not an animated voice chat. Virtually all voice chat applications always show you who's in the room, even if they're muted.
